How to use
Paste or type your text into the box — the counts update as you type. Your text never leaves your device: everything is counted right in the browser.
Reading time uses an average silent reading speed of about 230 words per minute; speaking time uses 140 words per minute (a talk, video or podcast). Below the result you’ll find the most frequent words with their share of all words — handy for spotting repetition or checking keyword density. Words shorter than three letters are skipped.
What gets counted
- Words — runs of letters and digits. Contractions like “don’t” and hyphenated words like “well-known” count as one word.
- Characters — every character, including spaces and line breaks. Emoji and accented letters count as one character, the way you see them.
- Characters without spaces — the same, minus spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Sentences — split by sentence-ending punctuation using the rules of the language.
- Paragraphs — non-empty lines.
When it’s useful
- Checking an essay, article or application against a word limit.
- Staying within limits: a page’s meta description is about 155 characters, a post on X is 280.
- Estimating translation or copywriting fees charged per word.
