How to use
Enter a data size and pick the units — the result and a table in every unit appear instantly.
Decimal vs. binary units
- Decimal (SI): 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 KB, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Drive and USB stick capacities use these.
- Binary (IEC): 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Operating systems often show these — sometimes still labeled “GB”.
- 1 byte = 8 bits.
Examples
- A 1 TB drive = 931.3 GiB, which is why Windows shows “931 GB”.
- A 256 GB phone = 238.4 GiB.
- A 100 Mbps connection = 12.5 MB/s.
FAQ
Where did the missing space on my new drive go? Nowhere — manufacturers count in decimal gigabytes, while your OS counts in binary ones. The gap is about 7% for GB and 9% for TB.
Are megabits and megabytes the same? No: a byte has 8 bits, so divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s. Or skip the math: pick “Megabits (Mb)” in the list.
