How to use
Enter the bill amount, the tip percentage and the number of people. You’ll see the tip, the total with tip and how much each person pays.
To avoid small change, use “Round each share up” — to a whole dollar, $10 or $100 — and see the actual tip percentage that results.
Formula
tip = bill × tip % / 100each person = (bill + tip) / number of people
Examples
- $86.40 bill, 18% tip, 3 people: tip $15.55, total $101.95, $33.98 each.
- $120 bill, 20% tip, 4 people: tip $24, total $144, $36 each.
How much to tip
In the US, 15–20% is customary at sit-down restaurants, with 18–20% common for good service. Some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for larger parties — check the bill so you don’t tip twice. Norms differ abroad: in much of Europe a tip of 5–10% or rounding up is usual.
FAQ
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Either is common; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional approach.
Why don’t the shares add up exactly? Each share is rounded to the cent, so the total can be off by a cent or two.
