How to use
Enter an amount, the VAT rate and choose what to do:
- Add VAT — you have a net price and need the price including VAT;
- Remove VAT — you have a price including VAT and need to know how much of it is tax.
The default rate is 20%, the standard VAT rate in the UK. Reduced rates (5%) and zero-rated goods also exist, and other countries have their own rates — just type the one you need.
Formulas
- Add:
VAT = net × rate / 100 - Remove:
VAT = gross × rate / (100 + rate)
Examples
- £250 net + 20% VAT = £300, of which £50 is VAT.
- Remove 20% VAT from £120: VAT is £20 (one sixth of the gross amount), net £100.
- US sales tax works like “Add”: $100 at 8.25% = $108.25.
FAQ
Why can’t I just take 20% of the gross price? Because VAT is charged on the net price. 20% of £120 is £24 — wrong; the VAT included in £120 is £20.
Does it work for EU VAT, GST or sales tax? Yes, the arithmetic is the same — enter the rate that applies.
