How to find a percentage of a number
To find X% of a number, multiply the number by X and divide by 100:
result = number × X / 100
For example, 20% of 150 is 150 × 20 / 100 = 30.
Examples
- A 15% discount on a $240 jacket: 240 × 15 / 100 = $36 off, so you pay $204.
- An 18% tip on a $62.50 restaurant bill: $11.25.
- 7.5% of 80: 6.
FAQ
Can I enter a decimal percentage? Yes. 12.5 works, and so does 12,5 if that’s how you write decimals.
What if the percentage is over 100? That’s fine: 150% of 40 is 60, which is the number itself plus another half.
How do I find what percent one number is of another? That’s the reverse operation: divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 30 out of 150 is 30 / 150 × 100 = 20%.
