How to use
Enter the numerators and denominators of two fractions and choose an operation. The result is simplified automatically and shown three ways: as a fraction, as a mixed number and as a decimal.
For mixed numbers (like 2 1/3) fill in the whole number; leave it at 0 if there isn’t one. Below the result you’ll see the steps: common denominator, numerators, simplifying.
For a negative fraction, put a minus sign in front of the numerator. A whole number is a fraction with a denominator of 1.
How it works
- Adding and subtracting: bring the fractions to a common denominator —
a/b ± c/d = (a·d ± c·b) / (b·d). - Multiplying:
a/b × c/d = (a·c) / (b·d). - Dividing: multiply by the flipped fraction —
a/b ÷ c/d = (a·d) / (b·c). - Then divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
Examples
- 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6.
- 2/3 − 1/4 = 5/12.
- 3/4 ÷ 1/8 = 6.
- 7/4 + 1/2 = 9/4, which is 2 1/4 or 2.25.
FAQ
What is a mixed number? An improper fraction written with its whole part: 9/4 = 2 1/4.
Can I divide by zero? No — if the second fraction is zero, division isn’t possible.
